Suzuki family of Hybrid cars

Suzuki Hybrid

Available on the Suzuki Ignis and Suzuki Swift is the company’s SHVS hybrid (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) system that provides many of the advantage of a normal hybrid system but is lighter and takes up less space than normal hybrid systems.

Both Suzuki hybrid cars feature an all-new platform that reduced vehicle weight as well as further increased rigidity with the use of a new structure and very high tensile steel. The new lightweight chassis ensures nimble performance as well as improved efficiency. The new chassis design also minimised the size of the engine compartment which has enabled maximising the space available for cabin occupants and luggage. Both the Swift and the Ignis feature a roomy and comfortable cabin with ample space between occupants, as well as generous headroom and legroom which contributing to its relaxing environment.

Suzuki SHVS

The SHVS mild hybrid is a compact and lightweight system that adds only 6.2kg and incorporates an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) which acts as both a generator and starter motor. The ISG is belt driven and assists the engine during vehicle set off and acceleration, with a power output of 2.3kW and torque of 50Nm. Additional energy is captured by regenerative braking, which helps to improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions.

The SHVS system also utilizes a compact high-performance lithium-ion battery placed under the front passenger seat to store energy and incorporates an idle stop function operated via the Integrated Start Generator. The SHVS system only uses its conventional engine starter motor when first started from cold, under all other conditions it uses the ISG unit to provide for smooth and quiet engine restarts.

When braking, the ISG unit detects when the brake pedal is depressed and utilizes the resistance of the ISG to help slow the vehicle as well as recharge both the lithium-ion battery and the conventional 12 volt battery.

Available for the Ignis SZ5 and Swift SZ5 manual models, the SHVS systems a top class CO2 emissions figure of 97g/km plus achieve a fuel consumption figure of 65.7mpg on the EC Combined Cycle for the 2WD model Ignis, while the 2WD Swift SZ5 delivered 61.4 mpg on the Combined Cycle.

Engine Auto Stop Start System

This SHVS further reduces fuel consumption by cutting the supply of petrol in the interval between when the car begins to decelerate and when it starts moving again. In the manner, the engine is stopped for longer periods than conventional stop start systems and operates at speeds of less than 10mph when the drivers foot is removed from the clutch pedal and the gearbox is in neutral. The engine then restarts as soon as the clutch pedal is depressed.

A five speed manual transmission is fitted as standard on all SHVS equipped cars and the gear ratios are optimised to help provide a good combination of performance and fuel economy. Both the Ignis SZ5 and Swift SZ5 are available with Suzuki’s ALLGRIP ‘AUTO’ 4WD system.
